Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Eye Shadow $18- I really like Josie Maran– it’s a brand that focuses on sourcing natural or organic ingredients for beautiful products that are vegan, paraban free, cruelty free, etc. When I saw that she released a new coconut water product– this time in the form of an eyeshadow, I knew I had to give this a try.
OK, so what is it exactly? It’s 50% coconut water and 50% Argan Infused Pigments that when mixed together give you a gorgeous hydrating liquid eyeshadow. As some of you may know, I have a sort-of obsession with rose gold, so out of the 6 shades it comes in, I obviously chose Rio de Rose Gold.
Here you can see how it looks after it’s all mixed up. It does take a solid 5 minutes of seriously shaking this to mix up the coconut water and pigment which isn’t a deal-breaker, but I do find it really annoying. It’s also in a glass bottle, which is nicer packing and more eco-friendly than a plastic bottle, but I’m always afraid I’m going to drop this while shaking it up and it will smash.
That negative aside, it comes with a white applicator that I originally wasn’t going to use, but after some trial and error, I found it to be the easiest way to get the eyeshadow exactly where you need it.
This stuff is seriously pigmented, so a little goes a long way. I usually put one layer on, it blends out super easy with my finger, and then I go in with another light layer to punch up the color. I use this and every other eyeshadow with a primer and it lasted all day long without any creasing or fading.
I went through my collection and only came up with three shades that were rose-gold-ish. The first swatch you can see is the Josie Maran Rio de Rose Gold, which I feel leans more to on copper side of things, but that doesn’t bother me as it’s still a beautiful shade. The second swatch is L’Oreal Infallable Eye Shadow in Amber Rush (full review here), which is another beautiful rose gold option, but this one leans more to the pink side. The last swatch is Trick from the NAKED 3 Palette and the most true rose gold eyeshadow of the bunch– but it also has kind of chunky glitter in it.
OK so my final verdict: At $18 each and with the 5 minute shake-up before use, I wouldn’t say you NEED this, but I would still recommend it because it’s an absolutely gorgeous product that lasts all day long. Plus, even though it is $18, you only need the tiniest bit, so this bottle will probably last you for years.
If you’re a Josie Maran fan already, then chances are you will pick this up just to try out her new product like I did. Whatever the reason you would pick this up, as long as you’re after a hydrating, long-wearing liquid eyeshadow, then this one definitely won’t let you down.
